This review paper examines the current successes and problems of biological control of soilborne pathogens with introduced bacteria in the rhizosphere. The possible reasons for inconsistent performance in the field are discussed. It focuses on the mechanisms by which introduced bacteria suppress pathogens and traits that may contribute to their ability to colonize roots.
