9874. Mache, R.. Jan. 1991. Protecting crops with a compost soup.. The Furrow, Western edition, p. 17..
Sprays made from compost extracts were found to reduce diseases such as gray mold, potato blight, and clover rot by up to 70%. Apple scab was controlled in some, but not all tests. Rusts were among the few diseases not controlled. The extract is made from compost that is at least six months old. Immerse compost in water, 3 to 6 times its volume. Stir and let set for a few days to several weeks. The liquid is strained and used as an extract. Extract does not kill fungi, but acts as a preventative. Needs to be re-applied at frequent intervals.
