Double rows of tall wheatgrass (Agropyron elongatum) were planted as barriers 48 ft apart near Culbertson, MT. The greatest soil water gain occurred during the harvest to spring period, with a precipitation storage efficiency ranging from 41-57 %. Annually cropped wheat and spring wheat following fallow responded positively to barrier protection. Yields were highest in the annual crop rotation of wheat-barley-safflower, followed by the 3-yr rotation with fallow. The traditional fallow-crop system had the lowest yields. Net returns paralleled yield results, and in most instances there was an economic benefit from the barriers. Also, safflower had a high net return and appears to have potential as an alternative crop in Montana.

Intensive applications of broad-spectrum insecticides in Wyoming have probably benefitted grasshoppers more than ranchers. Researchers compared pesticide use and grasshopper infestations in two bordering counties. Infestations were more frequent and longer lasting in one county even though the other county did more spraying. Apparently, the spraying was more damaging to predators and parasites of grasshoppers than to the grasshoppers.

Intensive application of broad spectrum insecticides to control economically damaging populations of rangeland grasshoppers in Wyoming appears to have increased the probability, duration, and stability of grasshopper outbreaks. The study compares about 30 years of data on grasshopper infestations and pesticide management between bordering counties. The county with greater insecticide treatment had longer, more stable, and more frequent infestations that were economically damaging. This was attributed to the reduction of parasites and predators of grasshoppers.
