Mechanical removal of straw was the only feasible alternative to burning at the time. Using straw removal, seed yields declined an average of 45% over a 7 harvest cycle compared to burning. A 3 harvest cycle would be best for a straw removal system. Grass seed production was not calculated to be profitable under straw removal, although sale of the straw would improve the situation. Several boundary charts were developed to show the relative profitability of grass versus wheat, barley, or peas under various price scenarios.
