Direct seeding of wheat into standing stubble in Saskatchewan is often done into dry soil. This study examined the importance of soil temperature and moisture potential on kernel water uptake and germination, so that the minimum requirements for successful crop establishment could be identified. The effects of temperature on speed of germination were much larger than those of moisture, indicating that seeding of stubbled-in winter wheat should proceed at the optimum date regardless of seedbed moisture conditions.

Effects of wheat straw mulch on soil water and soil temperature in the 0 to 7.6 cm soil layer and their subsequent influence on plant development and grain yields of winter wheat were evaluated over a 3 year period. Mulch rates of 0, 1680, and 3360 kg/ha were applied randomly or in bands centered over or between wheat rows planted in 35, 70, and 90 cm row spacings. Band applications of straw were applied at the same rates per unit areas as that covered by randomly applied straw but in band widths of 18, 35, and 45 cm for the respective row spacings.

Winter wheat can be produced on the northern edge of the North American Great Plains provided it is protected from winterkill by an insulating blanket of snow. No-till seeding into standing stubble has provided the most efficient means of maintaining this protective snow cover. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of soil temperature, soil water, and seeding date and depth on median emergence time, development, and cold tolerance of winter wheat plants grown under controlled laboratory conditons.
