Four surface and 3 subsurface soils (including Walla Walla silt loam) were exposed to anhydrous ammonia and reequilibrated with the atmosphere prior to extraction with water. The amount of carbon solubilized was then determined. 3-10% of indigenous soil carbon was extracted, and actual amount of C was proportional to the original soil C content. Soil moisture had little effect on the amount of C solubilized. Within 3 days 20-50% of initially retained N was lost to the atmosphere. Changes in structural stability may be more related to phenomena accompanying large pH changes than to dissolution and redistribution of the organic fraction. T: Carbon measured in water extracts of soils treated with anhydrous ammonia. Total N values of ammoniated soils and water extracts. Changes in ammonium retention of soils with time of exposure to atmosphere. Percentage of indigenous carbon extracted with various normalities of NH4OH.
