Since 2010, Colleen has coordinated farmers market research for the WSU Small Farms Program and Farmers Market Action Team. She co-authored the “WSDA Small Farm and Direct Marketing Handbook” (6th Edition) in 2009 and “Washington State Farmers Market Management Toolkit” 1st edition in 2012 and 2nd edition in 2016. Colleen serves on the board of the Washington State Farmers Market Association and was named the “2011 Advocate of the Year” by the Tilth Producers of Washington.
She has a BS from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and MA in Geography from the University of Washington. Colleen began working in international development, primarily Latin American, in the early 1990s. After graduate school and projects with organic farmers in Honduras and California, she returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2003 to open a regional office for Heifer International. Her Heifer projects emphasized participatory methodologies and focused on building community-based, just food systems, sustainable livestock, immigrant farming, and alternative marketing.
