Biennium report advancing composting, biochar, digestion, and waste-to-energy innovation in Washington.

This biennium summary report documents research, extension, and technical assistance conducted through the Waste to Fuels Technology (WTFT) Partnership during 2021–2023. The partnership supports evaluation and advancement of organics processing technologies including composting, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, biochar production, nutrient recovery, and emerging waste-to-energy systems.
During this period, efforts focused on measuring and reducing air emissions from composting systems, improving understanding of materials recovery and solid waste-to-energy technologies, and developing strategies to convert food waste and woody biomass into higher-value products. Education and outreach activities supported facility operators, industry partners, and policymakers across Washington state.
The report also highlights how WTFT investments helped leverage additional external funding and expand collaboration across research, industry, and public agencies. Together, the findings inform implementation of Washington’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Plan and advance infrastructure and policy strategies for sustainable organics management.
