Compost Professionals Training

WSU is partnering with the Washington Organic Recycling Council (WORC) to deliver Compost Professional Training. Modeled after the long-running Compost Facility Operator Training, this three-day course is designed for professionals seeking a deeper understanding of compost science, technology, economics, and regulations.

The training is intended for compost facility operators, technical service providers, public works and municipal staff, regulators, conservation districts, and others working in the organics recycling sector. Through classroom instruction, expert presentations, facilitated discussions, and facility tours, participants explore topics including compost biology and chemistry, feedstock management, processing and monitoring technologies, odor and water management, regulatory frameworks, and emerging markets.

WSU scientists and industry leaders contribute instruction throughout the course, including sessions led by CSANR’s Doug Collins on compost biology and chemistry and Rachel Weime on emerging feedstocks. The curriculum combines scientific foundations with practical, real-world applications, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools needed to manage compost systems that are effective, compliant, and economically sustainable.
