Technical Assessment of Potential Climate Impact and Economic Viability of Biochar Technologies for Small-Scale Agriculture in the Pacific Northwest

Technical assessment evaluating climate benefits and economic feasibility of small-scale biochar systems in Pacific Northwest agriculture.

This report evaluates the climate mitigation potential and economic viability of implementing biochar technologies at small scale in Pacific Northwest agriculture. Prepared for Steward Holdings, LLC, the assessment examines feedstock availability, production technologies (including flame-cap kilns, slow-pyrolysis kilns, and small gasifiers), integration with composting and anaerobic digestion, and application pathways for soil amendment.

The report includes life cycle assessment considerations, regional climate projections, and analysis of carbon offset mechanisms such as Verra and Puro.Earth. It quantifies potential greenhouse gas reductions, evaluates revenue streams from carbon credits and bioenergy production, and identifies technical and logistical gaps that may limit adoption. Results integrate agronomic, economic, geographic, and climate variables to identify optimal technology–feedstock combinations for small-scale producers.

The assessment concludes with recommendations and a path forward for scaling biochar deployment in ways that enhance soil health, support rural economies, and contribute to long-term carbon sequestration in the Pacific Northwest.
