Advancing Organics Management in Washington State: The Waste to Fuels Technology Partnership 2019–2021 Biennium

This report summarizes research and extension activities conducted during the 2019–2021 biennium under the Waste to Fuels Technology Partnership between Washington State University and the Washington State Department of Ecology. The partnership supports development and evaluation of technologies that improve organics management, reduce emissions, and create higher-value products from waste streams.

Work during this biennium included studies on compost air emissions measurement, biochar integration into composting systems, greenhouse gas mitigation, soil amendment performance in field crops, anaerobic digestion optimization, and conversion of organic wastes into renewable fuels and biochemicals. Projects combined laboratory testing, field trials, modeling, and industry collaboration to address technical, environmental, and economic barriers to broader implementation.

Together, the findings support Washington’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Plan and provide technical foundations for advancing waste-to-energy systems, soil health improvements, and carbon management strategies statewide.
