The Pacific Northwest Gardener’s Handbook: Growing for the Future is WSU Extension’s expanded and modernized gardening reference, revised in June 2025. This 620-page handbook updates the 2010 Master Gardener Manual and reflects years of multidisciplinary expertise tailored to Washington state climates and growing conditions.

Designed as core training material for WSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers, the handbook also serves green industry professionals and home gardeners seeking science-based horticultural guidance. Topics range from foundational plant science, soils, and composting to vegetable gardening, orchards, pest management, pollinators, climate change, waterwise landscaping, wildfire preparedness, and sustainable home landscapes. The publication underwent peer review and incorporates adapted materials from partner institutions with permission.

This edition reflects current challenges facing Washington communities, including climate resilience, biodiversity, water conservation, and integrated pest management, positioning the handbook as a comprehensive resource for gardening in a changing environment.
