Researchers track beneficial parasites of leafhoppers to support biological control strategies for X-disease in Washington cherries.
This BIOAg blog post highlights research investigating natural enemies that may help manage X-disease, a major emerging threat to cherry and stone fruit production in the Pacific Northwest. X-disease is caused by a phytoplasma bacterium transmitted by leafhoppers and can render fruit small and bitter. Because infected trees cannot be cured, growers typically rely on repeated insecticide applications to control leafhopper populations, increasing management costs and environmental concerns.
Researchers are exploring biological control alternatives by identifying beneficial organisms that parasitize leafhopper vectors. Several promising natural enemies have been identified, including a parasitic big-headed fly, a pincer wasp, and an insect-associated fungus. The research team is developing a multiplex qPCR molecular assay that can simultaneously detect parasitism by these organisms as well as the presence of the X-disease phytoplasma within leafhopper samples.
Field studies across central Washington evaluate when and where these natural enemies occur and their potential role in suppressing leafhopper populations. The results may help develop sustainable pest management strategies that reduce reliance on insecticides while protecting cherry production.
