Washington Soil Health Initiative

Statewide partnership advancing soil health through research, extension, and long-term monitoring across Washington’s major cropping systems.

Farm equipment sits on a field on a partly cloudy day.

Launched in 2019 with leadership from CSANR, the Washington Soil Health Initiative (WaSHI) is a statewide partnership that funds research, extension, and demonstration through a network of Long-Term Agroecological Research and Extension (LTARE) sites representing major cropping systems across the state.

Its four primary goals are to:

  • Document soil health across Washington agriculture
  • Cultivate awareness among producers, policymakers, and the public
  • Improve understanding of the links between soil, production, and the environment
  • Increase adoption of practices that build soil health

By convening partners and housing the initiative at WSU, CSANR ensures WaSHI delivers on its ambitious vision: providing soil health baselines and monitoring tools, identifying effective management strategies, and supporting wider adoption of practices that strengthen farm profitability, environmental quality, and long-term food system resilience.
