Stripper Header and Direct Seeding: Ron and Andy Juris Video

Ron and Andy Juris describe how a stripper header helps conserve standing residue and soil moisture in dryland wheat production.

This video features Ron and Andy Juris, dryland wheat farmers near Bickleton, Washington, describing their use of a stripper header as part of a no-till residue and moisture management system. Farming in a low-rainfall area with shallow soils, the Jurises use the stripper header to leave more standing wheat residue than a traditional header, helping protect soil, reduce wind near emerging seedlings, shade the soil surface, and capture moisture from snow, mist, and fog. The video explains how the Shelbourne Reynolds CVS 32 stripper header works by stripping kernels from the wheat head while leaving most of the plant standing. The Jurises also discuss the importance of pairing the stripper header with a drill that can seed through heavy residue, as well as adjustments to equipment operation, skid plates, and herbicide application to make the system work. The video frames these practices as part of a family history of conservation-focused innovation and long-term economic sustainability.
