Summary of research advancing valuable, sustainable uses for Washington’s organic waste streams.

This report synthesizes research and outreach completed through the 2017–2019 Waste to Fuels Technology Partnership. It examines how Washington can recover more value from food waste, green waste, woody biomass, and other organic materials through composting, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, nutrient recovery, and integrated municipal biorefineries. The report summarizes work on compost-facility emissions; the agricultural value and policy context of compost; combined biochar and compost amendments; biochar’s carbon drawdown, water-holding, and crop-production potential; engineered biochars for phosphate removal; and the production costs and potential agricultural markets for biochar. It also documents stakeholder engagement and Extension activities. Together, the findings identify technical, economic, and policy opportunities and barriers affecting the recovery of energy, nutrients, soil amendments, and other valuable products from Washington’s organic waste streams.
