Collaborative summit identifies barriers and recommendations for how Washington State University could to strengthen community engaged research.

This report summarizes findings from the Engaged! Summit, a one-day event hosted by Washington State University’s Center for Environmental Research, Education, and Outreach to strengthen community engaged research (CER) across the university. The summit brought together faculty, staff, administrators, postdocs, and graduate students from 22 units to discuss challenges, share examples, and identify opportunities for supporting and enabling CER.
Participants highlighted both the benefits of CER—such as building trust, addressing community needs, and co-producing knowledge—and the barriers, including limited time, resources, and institutional support. The report synthesizes key discussions and presents actionable recommendations across six key elements for fostering community engaged research at WSU.
