Advancing Organics Management in Washington State: The Waste to Fuels Technology Partnership 2015–2017 Biennium

This partnership advances systems-level approaches to managing organic residuals in Washington state by integrating research, technology development, and outreach. Between 2015 and 2017, efforts focused on anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, composting, biochar, nutrient recovery, alternative fuels, carbon accounting, and bioelectrochemical systems. The work aimed to reduce landfill disposal and greenhouse gas emissions while improving the economic viability of organics processing and generating value-added products. Applied projects included polyphenol recovery from grape pomace, alternative jet fuel pathways, woody biomass resource assessments, and biochar production and application. Extension and technology transfer activities supported adoption by industry and agencies. Together, this partnership demonstrates coordinated strategies to improve the productivity and environmental performance of organic waste management systems in Washington state.
